PFLAG PTC will be a welcoming and inclusive place of gathering. We will recognize the essential humanity of all people and the need to feel embraced, cared for, and respected. We will strive to acknowledge all who come to the meetings for who they are and where they come from.
THE BEGINNING OF PFLAG PTC
PFLAG Peachtree City is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Although we became an official PFLAG chapter on March 30, 2017, our roots go back five years earlier, when Fayetteville resident Debbie Wright invited a group of her church friends, all with gay children, to meet at her home on March 22, 2012 (the 3rd Thursday of the month). Eight adults, representing four families, attended that first meeting.
Debbie contacted PFLAG’s Gulf Region director about starting a new chapter; he put her in contact with PFLAG Atlanta board members Tori and David Stivers who also lived in Fayette County.
The group held a support meeting at the Peachtree City library in May 2012. But since the library closed before 7 PM during summer months, they had to find a new place. St. Andrews in the Pines Episcopal Church agreed to let the group meet in their Parish Hall.
In 2017, PFLAG Atlanta offered to donate their entire lending library to the Peachtree City chapter. Unfortunately, St. Andrews did not have space for the bookcase, so First Presbyterian Church Peachtree City offered to host the chapter, beginning August 14, 2017.
THE STORY OF PFLAG NATIONAL
PFLAG (originally standing for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) National was founded in 1972 with the simple act of a mother, Jeanne Manford, publicly supporting her gay son. PFLAG (www.pflag.org) is the nation’s largest family and ally organization.
In 2014, the organization officially changed its name from "Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays" to, simply, PFLAG. This change was made to accurately reflect PFLAG members, those PFLAG serves, and the inclusive work PFLAG has been doing for decades.
PFLAG has 400 chapters and 200,000 supporters crossing multiple generations of American families in major urban centers, small cities, and rural areas in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
This vast grassroots network is cultivated, resourced, and serviced by PFLAG National, located in Washington, D.C., the National Board of Directors and 13 volunteer Regional Directors.
